At Consumer Reports they are, where they regularly test GPS devices. In there tests they evaluate screen size, portability, ease of use, mounting systems, and other features. The software can be used for many purposes from looking on maps, navigation, logging tracks and routes, measuring speed and distance, to entertain with fun games.
GPS is helping to save lives and property across the nation. In 2002, it enabled rescuers to drill a shaft to free trapped miners in Somerset PA. This a great devise for in car use and its just as useful when on foot plus its a great way to get around a foreign city too. With GPS rental services this device became even more available and useful. It is extremely useful in the field of telecommunication and scientific research because of accurate time reference that it provides. It is likely that GPS applications will expand in the coming years to support more human activities.
Garmin and Magellan tell us that there has never been a report of any problem caused to any avionic system as a result of the use of the device on an aircraft. No pilot or engineer on the GPS newsgroup has ever reported a GPS receiver causing interference to an avionics system on an aircraft.
